What's on My Keeper Shelf?

I love to read, and I never go anywhere without a book in hand. But I'm highly selective about what I choose to read. Over the years, I've accumulated a list of go-to authors whose books never disappoint and whose works I eagerly await. Here, in no particular order, are three of those favorites and why I return again and again to their works.

#1 – Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Breathing Room, First Lady, It Had to Be You, etc. – Complex, fully realized characters whose sometimes wildly inappropriate actions are always properly and expertly motivated and who have a deep and authentic backstory.

#2 – Deborah Crombie, Duncan Kincaid, Gemma James (A Share in Death, Bitter Feast, etc.) series – Careful world-building, engaging characters that have become a family, and seamless interweaving of past and present so that the anatomy of a crime can be traced to the root cause.

#3 – Elizabeth Peters, The Amelia Peabody mysteries – The creation of characters, relationships, and settings sufficient to sustain a thoroughly fascinating series set during the archeological heyday in Egypt.

Authors Helping Others - Australian Fire Victims

I'm proud to be part of a group of authors and a publishing house willing to take action to help those in need.

In a whirlwind of activity across the world, the authors of the Wild Rose Press ran with an idea proposed by Australian author Stephen B. King to create an anthology of contributed stories. The entire profits of this anthology would be donated to relief organizations in Australia, dedicated to helping the country recover from devastating wildfires.

Due to overwhelming support from Wild Rose Press authors who donated stories for which they will receive no royalties, and the publisher, editor, and cover artist who will receive no payments beyond costs, the single anthology has expanded to three books. The first is pictured here. The second, pictured below, is also available, with the third coming in February.

These books are available in print and e-book form and can be purchased at the links below. Please consider supporting those in need on the other side of the world. As a thank-you, you'll receive all these amazing stories by 40 authors with big hearts and incredible talent.

Writing Tip

Join me on my good friend Mary Hughes' blog for a tip on adding 'flesh' to a scene. All scenes grow from a plot point or intention, but the difference between a sketch and a full-bodied scene is what I call "layering." Hope over to Mary Hughes 3T Writing Tidbit to discover how this is done.
